Lung Association of Saskatchewan General Conditions For Awards of Research Grants
  1. Grants are made to qualified personnel who are working in the health field in Saskatchewan who can demonstrate their ability to perform the proposed research. The application must have the prior approval of the institution's executive head.
  2. Any commitments (or expenditures) incurred by the grantee either in excess of the grant funds provided or beyond the term of the grant are the responsibility of the grantee.
  3. Grants are made as contributions toward the cost of the research proposed by individual investigators. Applicants and co-applicants are not permitted to receive remuneration from operating grant awards. Grant funds are not to be used for travel unless the expenditure is essential for the specific research proposed in the application.
  4. All research grant applications involving studies on patients or experiments on human volunteers must be accompanied by the approval of a Canadian university medical ethics committee.
  5. Where a research project involves the use of animals, they must be cared for in accordance with the principles contained in the Care of Experimental Animals, a Guide for Canada, Canadian Council on Animal Care.
  6. A grant which has also been submitted to another agency for funding higher than $60,000 per year is not acceptable. The applicant should focus the application to indicate precisely what portions of the research would be carried out by the Lung Association of Saskatchewan funding. The grant should stand alone with a specific study to be conducted within the funding requested from the Lung Association or it must be precisely specified exactly which portions of the larger grant would be carried out if Lung Association of Saskatchewan funding is awarded.
  7. Letters confirming the extent of collaboration must be submitted for all collaborators who are not co-applicants.
  8. All applications for funding will be reviewed by the Canadian Lung Association Research Grant Review Committee and must comply with the submission requirements and deadlines specified by the Committee. The Committee will provide rankings of the applications for scientific merit including an assessment of whether or not the application is suitable for funding. Applications which are incomplete or received after the deadline specified by the CLA Grant Review Committee will not be considered.
  9. The grantee (or the institution on his/her behalf) shall, if the need arises, immediately notify the Lung Association of Saskatchewan of his/her inability, for any reason, to carry out or complete the research for which the grant has been made.
  10. If a grantee transfers from one institution to another, his/her grant lapses, and he/she must reapply from the second institution for a new grant.
  11. Title to equipment purchased under the grant remains with the institution at which the grant is held but its use for research projects listed on the grantee's application shall be given priority over other use.
  12. Payments will be made quarterly, in advance to an educational or health care institution. For multi-year grants, the grantee shall make a brief report of progress annually, due May 30 of each year. Funding for the subsequent year of multi-year grants will be contingent upon satisfactory progress. All grantees must submit a full report upon completion of the investigation.
  13. The Lung Association of Saskatchewan would appreciate acknowledgment of assistance received in publications resulting from investigations supported by the award. It is understood that the Lung Association may include in its publications summaries of progress and results of any research projects to which it has made grants in aid.
  14. Successful grant applicants will indemnify and save harmless the Lung Association of Saskatchewan Inc. from all actions, claims, suits, demands, liabilities, losses, damages, charges, costs or expenses (including legal fees) which may be imposed upon or incurred by or asserted against the Lung Association of Saskatchewan Inc. by reason of or arising out of the funding of the proposed research.
  15. The Lung Association of Saskatchewan requires an audited statement for all expenditures from the grant to be submitted at the end of each granting year. The unspent balance of all Lung Association of Saskatchewan research grants at June 30th one year following the final granting year must be returned to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan, unless the grantee makes a special application to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan for extension of the granting period before May 1 of the granting year, which, if accepted, would allow the grantee to retain the funds for a further specified period.
